AUMUND supplies conveying and cooling systems for the iron metallurgy processes in direct reduction, smelting and blast furnaces, such as applications for horizontal and vertical conveying of various bulk materials, as well as silo or bunker extraction and specialised technology for hot and abrasive bulk materials, optionally incorporating inert gas.

Direct reduction and smelting

AUMUND has developed innovative conveyors to take hot DRI (direct reduced iron or sponge iron) either from the Midrex shaft furnace or in other processes from the rotary hearth, rotary furnace or fluidized bed. This means for example that the material can be directly charged into an electric-arc furnace (EAF) while it is still hot. Several special applications have been developed for this technological environment. AUMUND’s hot material and cooling conveyors are unmatched internationally.

DR feed

Particularly tall AUMUND bucket elevators are used for material input in direct reduction.

Hot extraction

AUMUND has developed ground-breaking conveyors for the discharge of hot DRI (direct reduced iron) using inert gas.

Elektro-arc furnace direct charging

The direct reduction furnace is connected directly to the electro-arc furnace by special AUMUND conveyors, which are reliable over short or longer distances. This innovative application saves a considerable amount of energy and increases the productivity of the plant.

Sintering plants

Here sinter is conveyed at temperatures of up to 1,000°C from the sintering plant to the cooler, or after the cooler if the material is still too hot for standard belt conveyors.

Main advantages and characteristics of the AUMUND sinter conveyor

  • Lower energy requirement and lower noise emissions, therefore better working conditions in comparison to vibrating conveyors
  • As relative motion between the sinter and the conveyor is eliminated, wear and sinter break-up are reduced
  • The precise, overlapping design of the conveyor pans minimises spillage
  • Low maintenance

Modern sinter shaft coolers utilise energy from the hot sinter and are connected by insulated AUMUND sinter conveyors in order to optimise energy recovery.

Coking plants

AUMUND conveyors are used in coal preparation, in ATEX design, as well as for conveying coke to the coke ovens and/or to the wet quenching plant. AUMUND rotary discharge machines or plough feeders efficiently clear the quenched coke from the coke ramp. Alternatively, the coke can be conveyed while it is still hot, on an AUMUND hot material conveyor, directly to the dry cooling plant.

Dry coke cooling

In cases where the coke is fed directly into the dry cooling plant, conveying is largely continuous, which means that the cooler does not require such a big buffer zone. Therefore, less capital expenditure is involved. In addition, the use of a CENTREX® extraction system further reduces the structural height requirement.

Blast furnace feed

Depending on the conditions, material input into the blast furnace can be carried out by designated AUMUND conveyors. For example, compact blast furnaces can be implemented or existing skip conveyors can be replaced as part of a modernisation. The input materials can also be charged at high temperatures if required.

Scrap conveying

Particularly large or solid pieces of scrap such as for example crop-ends, strip heads/bases, cut-offs in pickling lines or hot end pieces in rolling mills can be transported on automated AUMUND conveyors.

Filter systems

Depending on the type and design of filter systems, dust and dry filter residues can be transported by AUMUND drag chain conveyors and/or AUMUND bucket elevators from the filter discharge to suitable storage silos.

Additives

Additives or other input materials, which for various reasons are delivered by truck, can be received by the Samson® material feeder, thus eliminating complicated, costly civil works and minimising dust emissions at the same time.

Pelleting

Horizontal, vertical or inclined conveying of bulk materials in the pelleting plant. Silos and bunker feed with bucket elevators and drag chain conveyors or silo extraction with CENTREX®.

Conveying of hot pellets

Conveying of hot pellets from the rotary furnace, at temperatures of up to 800°C, to or from the cooler.

Pellet cooling

In cases where the main cooler does not cool the pellets sufficiently, an AUMUND conveyor with specially designed air flow features and dedusting at the inlet provides additional air cooling of hot pellets.

Briquetting

Conveying and cooling of HBI iron ore briquettes (hot briquetted iron) underneath briquetting presses is a typical application for AUMUND hot material and cooling conveyors.

HBI conveying

Conveying of hot HBI from briquetting presses to onward processing with AUMUND hot material conveyors.

HBI cooling

Controlled, slow cooling down (“smooth cooling” rather than in a quenching tank) of the HBI on the patented AUMUND cooling conveyor with a mixture of mist and air for high quality briquettes.

Main advantages and characteristics of the AUMUND HBI cooling conveyor

  • Cooling with the aid of a defined water mist but with low water consumption
  • Avoidance of sludge formation
  • Clean environment due to closed system
  • Improvement of the HBI quality by slow cooling

Material stockpiles

For extraction of typical bulk materials from longitudinal storage or silo batteries, AUMUND rotary discharge machines in various designs are ideal. Nowadays, in order to reduce dust emissions, storage or silos are often covered. Greater storage capacity per surface area can be achieved in silos than in longitudinal or circular stockpiles.

AUMUND rotary discharge machines are distinguished by the following characteristics:

  • Can be used under silos and closed longitudinal stockpiles, preventing dust emissions
  • No dust sensors required, no risk of material loss, no soiling by dust or contamination of the water table
  • Maximum storage capacity on minimum surface area
  • Material mixtures from various silos / bunkers is possible
  • First-in, first-out principle prevents bridging and protects from combustion
